Real-Time Recap

The 200 medley relay kicked off the action, with the Santa Margarita girls upgrading last year’s bronze to gold in dominant fashion, winning by 1.95 seconds. Their quartet of Gracyn Aquino (25.70), Eileen Song (29.31), Chloe Stinson (24.16), and Victoria Mori (23.03) touched in 1:42.20.

San Ramon Valley (1:44.15) edged out Palo Alto (1:44.16) by just one-hundredth of a second for silver. The performances marked a big step forward for both programs—San Ramon finished 8th last year, while Palo Alto was 9th.

The boys’ race told a completely different story, with the top three teams separated by just 0.11 seconds at the final touch. Valley Christian—who hadn’t even qualified for the ‘A’ final last year—emerged victorious in 1:30.85, narrowly edging out Clovis West High School (1:30.87). Davis High School, the 8th-place finishers in 2024, also broke 1:31 with a time of 1:30.96.

Valley Christian’s foursome featured Garic Shao (23.87), Jack Cameron (24.63), Robert White III (23.43), and Princeton commit Yury Kuzmenko, who delivered a scorching 18.92 anchor split. Kuzmenko dove in with his team trailing Davis High by over a second at the 150 mark but surged home with the fastest anchor split in the field—nearly seven-tenths quicker than anyone else.

Three swimmers broke the 1:50 barrier in the girls’ 200 free, led by a dominant performance from Mira Costa senior Bella Brito, who touched in 1:46.89 to win the state title by nearly three seconds.

The USC commit came just shy of her personal best—1:46.48 from last December’s Winter Junior Championships in Austin. She didn’t race this event at last year’s meet, instead opting for the 200 IM and 100 breast, where she placed 2nd and 1st, respectively.

Santiago High School sophomore Charlotte Milkie notched a time of 1:49.44, a bit off her lifetime best of 1:48.07 from December , while Granite Hills freshman Ella Morgan posted a 1:49.93, well shy of the 1:48.13 she swam just last week.

In the boys’ race, Foothill sophomore Luka Mijatovic busted out a new career best of 1:33.52 to win the state championship by over two seconds, breaking the 1:34 barrier for the first time and improving on his runner-up performance from last year. He also eclipsed his previous best of 1:34.10 from April and shaved six hundredths off Rex Maurer’s 2023 meet record of 1:33.58.

Mijatovic’s splits today were 21.86, 23.61, 24.02, and 24.03 for his four 50s, compared to 22.16, 23.84, 24.20, and 23.90 from his previous PB, with most of his time drop coming from the front 100.

Point Loma sophomore Alex Pletcher (1:35.63) and Kings Academy junior Nathan Foucu (1:35.78) also earned podium finishes, with Pletcher breaking his prelims best time of 1:36.00 and Foucu just shy of his 1:35.40 best.

  3. Nathan Foucu (Kings Academy) — 1:35.78

Santa Margarita senior Teagan O’Dell captured gold in the girls’ 200 IM, finishing in 1:53.96 to win by a commanding five seconds. Though a bit off her personal best of 1:52.63 and the 1:53.38 national high school record, she was faster in yesterday’s prelims with a 1:53.72. Los Altos sophomore Maren Byrne was the only other girl to crack the 2-minute barrier, posting a best time of 1:59.54 for silver. West Ranch freshman Emma Hussein took 3rd with a 2:00.96, about a second off her career-record 2:00.00.

O’Dell has versatility reminiscent of Alex Walsh and Bella Sims, making her an incredibly valuable addition to the rebuilding Cal Bears. She holds class-leading times in the 200 freestyle, both backstroke distances, and both IM events. We ranked her No. 2 in our Girls’ Class of 2025 recruit rankings—trailing only Olympic champion Alex Shackell, who leads the class in both butterfly events and the sprint freestyles.

In the boys’ competition, Dougherty Valley junior and Cal commit Tim Wu dethroned defending champion Shareed Elaydi, an Archbishop Mitty sophomore, by setting a new meet record of 1:44.55.

Elaydi came close to breaking the record himself, touching in 1:44.96—just shy of the previous meet record of 1:44.94 set by Colin Geer, now a Michigan swimmer, in 2023.

Wu’s swim was a huge improvement from his 4thplace finish last year, when he clocked 1:47.04. He also shattered his personal best of 1:45.24 from earlier this April, while Elaydi narrowly missed his own best time of 1:44.79 from December’s Winter Juniors.

Splits Comparison:

Wu Elaydi
Butterfly 22.91 22.74

Whitney junior and UCLA commit Jada Duncan was simply too quick to catch in the girls’ 50 free, successfully defending her title with a meet record swim of 22.23. That gold-medal effort clipped her own record of 22.26 from prelims, and while not a personal best, it was just shy of the 22.14 she notched at December’s Winter Juniors.

Campolindo freshman Stella Canoles snagged silver in 22.49, dropping from her previous best of 22.79. Irvington sophomore Alison Su rounded out the podium with the only other sub-23 showing in the field, equaling her personal standard of 22.94 in the process.

After his sizzling 18.92 relay split earlier in the session, Valley Christian junior and Princeton commit Yury Kuzmenko returned to the pool and clocked 19.74 to win the boys’ 50 free, standing as the only swimmer under the 20-second barrier. He was slightly off his 19.55 lifetime best and meet record from prelims.

West Park’s Jordan Ragland (20.05) and last year’s runner-up Tyler Porter (20.08) of Bellarmine, both juniors, also earned spots on the podium. Ragland, a Louisville commit, has been as fast as 19.69 in his career. Porter has also been a quick 19.49 in the past.

Girls’ 50 Freestyle Podium:

  1. Jada Duncan (Whitney) — 22.23 *Meet Record*

Duncan returned to the water about 45 minutes after the 50 free to become the day’s first double event winner, defending her title in the 100 fly with a new meet record of 52.09. That effort lowered her previous mark (and lifetime best) of 52.14 from prelims and improved upon her 2023 winning time of 52.51. She split 25.12 going out and closed strong in 26.97.

Valencia junior and Missouri commit Tori Yamamura took silver in 53.38, just off her 52.83 career best from last week. It’s an upgrade from her 3rd place finish a year ago.

Archbishop Mitty sophomore Isabel Wu rounded out the podium with a 54.55 for bronze, narrowly missing her career record by one hundredth.

Angelo Rodriguez junior Brandon Ha dominated the boys’ 100 fly, clocking 46.34 to win by nearly a second and a half. The swim came just shy of his personal best of 46.27 from last week, but it was enough to secure his first-ever state title.

Cosumnes Oaks sophomore Aiden Collins surged to silver in 47.77, dropping nearly a full second from his 48.75 prelims best. Clovis West junior and U.S. Air Force Academy commit Stanley Oka rounded out the medalists in 48.12.

After earning silver in the 50 free earlier in the day, Campolindo freshman Stella Canoles returned to upend defending champion Ava DeAnda of Riverside Poly in the 100 free, 49.26 to 49.38. Canoles clipped her own personal best of 49.38 to boot.

DeAnda, who stormed to a 48.27 win last year, had posted a 49.11 in prelims—fast enough to win again had she matched it in the final.

Murrieta Valley freshman Kaylee Richmond punched 49.77 for 3rd, dropping her previous best of 49.99 set just two weeks prior and becoming the only other swimmer under the 50-second barrier.

In the boys’ field, three sub-44 swims were logged, with Yury Kuzmenko becoming the first boy and second swimmer of the day to capture double gold. The Valley Christian junior touched in 43.34 to complete his sprint free sweep, sliding under his previous best of 43.42 in the process.

Granite Bay junior and U.S. Military Academy commit Brody Chandler clocked 43.41 for silver, lowering his 43.63 career record from last week, while Nathan Foucu of The King’s Academy grabbed his second bronze of the meet with a 43.83—just off his 43.54 personal standard from prelims.

Granada junior Brooke Bennett, a University of Georgia commit, held off a late surge to win the girls’ 500 free in 4:49.15. She opened in 26.53, maintained consistent 29-lows throughout the race, and closed strong in 28.58 to outpace a tight field. Though well off her career best of 4:47.75 from early April, Bennett still came away with the title.

Taylor Steelman, a senior at San Marcos and a Texas Christian University commit, crushed her previous best of 4:51.91 by more than two seconds. She charged home in a blistering 28.20 final 50 to nearly run down Bennett, ultimately settling for silver in 4:49.66.

Clovis North sophomore Rowyn Wilber, who notched a lifetime best of 4:49.14 earlier this season, finished third in 4:51.79. She led early with a 26.49 split and remained in close contact through the first half of the race before slowly fading off.

Foothills sophomore Luka Mijatovic defended his state title in the boys’ 500 free, breaking both the meet record and the overall national high school record. The 16-year-old blasted a time of 4:11.91 to shatter Rex Maurer’s 2023 NHS record of 4:12.70 and Matthew Chai’s 2022 meet record of 4:15.09. Mijatovic has also posted a faster 4:10.96 time outside of high school competition.

Behind Mijatovic’s electric swim, Del Norte senior Julien Rousseau claimed silver in 4:21.23, followed by Woodside senior Seth Collett who earned bronze with a 4:22.66. Monte Vista secured silver in 1:33.53, while Del Oro High School checked in at 1:34.58 for 3rd. Monte Vista upgraded from a silver medal a year ago, while Del Oro didn’t even make the A-final in 2024.

The boys’ race was a different story as Clovis West’s (1:21.39) foursome of Sylas Maurin (20.88), Tobin Reed (19.76), Jake Salcedo (20.78), and Stanley Oka (19.97) improved dramatically, moving from 7th last year to first this time after finishing 2nd in the medley relay to open the night. They narrowly missed the meet record by just 0.03.

Their squad won by 1.1 seconds over De La Salle High School, which touched in 1:22.49, while Valley Christian secured 3rd in 1:22.52, marking their second relay podium appearance of the day after winning gold in the medley.

Teagan O’Dell became the second woman and fourth swimmer of the day to double up on individual victories with a time of 51.27 in the 100 back, just shy of her 50.82 meet record set during yesterday’s prelims. She opened in 24.96 tonight and closed in 26.31, compared to her prelim splits of 24.94 and 25.88, showing the final 50 wasn’t quite at the same level tonight.

Newbury Park junior Megan Wang, committed to the University of California-San Diego, broke her prelim best time of 53.99 by touching 53.62 for silver, upgrading from 7th last year. Monte Vista sophomore Ella Busquets, who set a 53.31 lifetime best in prelims, earned bronze with a 53.66, moving from 2nd to 3rd compared to last year.

Tim Wu followed in the footsteps of O’Dell as the fifth swimmer to nab double gold on the day. He won the boys’ 100 back with a time of 47.20, edging ahead of his 47.39 career standard to boot.

He edged out Northwood senior Derek Hitchens (47.67), a Columbia commit who has swum as fast as 47.19, and Jesuit senior Emi Zamudio (47.95), a USC commit whose personal best of 47.82 was set just last week.

The USC commit, who owns a personal standard of 59.09 from December, held off Archbishop Mitty sophomore Mia Su, who touched in 1:01.00—just shy of her 1:00.86 best from the same month.

Clovis North senior Ellie Fitzgerald, an Arizona commit, rounded out the podium in 1:02.32, though she has been significantly faster with a 1:00.58 best.

After missing out on a title defense in the 200 IM, Archbishop Mitty sophomore Shareef Elaydi stormed into the boys’ 100 breast with a vengeance, throwing down a swift 53.18 to obliterate his previous best of 53.94. Del Oro grabbed silver in 3:24.38, while Monte Vista (3:25.24) rounded out the top three.

In the boys’ race, Clovis West and Northwood were neck and neck the whole way, but Clovis secured their second freestyle relay win of the day with a 2:58.91, edging out Northwood’s 2:59.14.

Clovis West led from the start, though a blistering 43.35 anchor leg from Northwood’s Derek Hitchens gave them a scare. Clovis’ Stanley Oka held him off with a 43.75 anchor to seal the win. Tobin Reed (44.46), Sylas Maurin (45.48), and Jake Salcedo (45.22) joined Oksa on the winning squad.

1:34.10 to 1:33.5. This kid keeps improving at a nuclear rate. Heilman waa 1:32.4 and I believe Williamson was at 1:33.0. He’s getting into their range in the shorter distances which is terrifying. And with little to no underwaters.
